4D Products recent Design and Innovation Award has been featured in the Manchester Evening News business news.
The TimeCode Buddy wifi Master, one of 4D Products’ most recent design projects, has beaten giants such as Sony and Canon to be awarded the prestigious IABM Peter Wayne Award – as well as an IABM Award for Excellence – at this year’s IABM Awards for Design & Innovation at the IBC show in Amsterdam.
“The TimeCode Buddy is an elegant solution to a real-world problem experienced daily by users around the world” declared IABM Director General Peter White about why the 4D Products designed project was given the prestigious award.
Developed by TimeCode Systems with the innovative product interface designed by 4D Products, the TimeCode Buddy allows production specialists in the broadcasting industry to use a single piece of kit for all of their timecode requirements.
Inventors of the TimeCode Buddy developed a prototype of the soon-to-be award winner, however they needed a design partner to translate their ideas into a consumer-friendly interface and design that they could take to market, which is why TimeCode Systems turned to North West product design company, 4D Products.
Speaking about their partnership with 4D Products, Paul Scurrell, TimeCode Buddy’s founder and director states; “Working with 4D Products has been a pleasure from the outset. They were exceptional when it came to understanding our needs and getting to know our market. From design right through to manufacture, their commitment to deliver something outstanding never wavered, changed or flagged”.
The IABM awards program, held yearly, is open to all global manufacturers and suppliers, recognising products that offer significant solutions or opportunities to the broadcast supply industry.
“For one of our product designs to be recognised by such a respected association is an absolute honour for us. From the outset, we believed that in order for TCS’s to make an impact in their established industry with multinational players, they needed to focus on great innovative design and give the user something extra, something desirable. Winning this prestigious award in the firstyear of trading against such big competition is proof that investing in good design is key for any business. It is a great reward for TCS, for their belief in 4D and allowing us the freedom to innovate and challenge existing methods” said 4D Products Director James Bell.

There are many Product Design Awards over the calendar year, and most other industries will have their share of awards too. Have you ever entered one of your products in a competition?
We recently entered a new hand held electronic device into the Design Week Awards 2012.
Why? Well we don’t have particularly large egos, but is always nice if the work you do gets recognition. But the real opportunity is one of marketing. The very fact we have entered the awards gives us something positive to talk about, and suggests we are delivering high quality work worthy of consideration in a national competition. Imagine if we were to win! The product, the company who own it, and our design capabilities will receive national press for all the right reasons.
Any business can talk about their own merits, USPs, etc, but it will always carry more weight if the positive words come from an unbiased third party with industry knowledge.
When you look at your product range, do you feel it’s worthy of competing for an award against others in your sector? If not, perhaps its time for change.
The MD of a medical diagnostics business once told us he wanted his products “to be the Apple Computers of our industry”. We are certainly up for a challenge, and that particular project recently won first place in a plastics design industry competition. Great PR for the client, their product, and the design team.
