Nano Filter – Mechanical Design

The Background

Sentinel Performance Solutions knew the time was right for expanding their product range and developing another heating filter with a reduced size and lower price point. 4D Products were appointed as the Product Design provider.

Concept Design

We worked closely with the client to identify ‘must have’ features and performance criteria, including a very stringent pressure testing specification. We then reviewed the design of the flagship Eliminator product, to identify opportunities to reduce size, whilst still delivering great performance from the hydro-cyclone filters.

3D CAD Design

The lower section of the filter became the main focus for the project. After a range of ideas were developed and presented, the preferred design solution was developed in 3D CAD, ready for injection moulding.

Various rounds of rapid prototyping were used to prove fit and function. The SLS prototypes were also used to assist the factory in developing their assembly and quality control process prior to injection moulded parts being available.

“We enjoyed working with 4DP on the Nano project and were very satisfied with all aspects of their work. With a highly professional approach throughout the project, I would have no hesitation in using their services again on any future design activities.”

The Result

The injection moulding was delivered in the UK by an automotive specialist, who were experienced in manufacturing high quality components for demanding applications.

The Nano filter was launched to coincide with the 2014 heating season. It is a great addition to the product range, offering more choice to Sentinel’s growing customer base.
