A GREAT START FOR URBAN
“The product is fantastic and we feel that 4D have done a great job, they worked very well with us on the products design and later with our sourcing company to refine and address the many challenges we faced throughout the process of getting to production”

iControl Distribution invents, develops, manufactures and markets the most innovative sports-related training and recreational play products from around the world. They approached 4D Products with the idea to develop a new, innovative football training apparatus that engaged the user in a fun activity, whilst simultaneously improving their ball control skills.
After much research online and impressed by the innovative nature of our case studies, iControl contacted 4D to discuss their ideas for football related training and play products. Products already on the market were very training orientated, had limited aesthetic appeal and performed limited functions for the user. Many were not very portable, were very simplistic and also over priced for the user experience they delivered.
We devised a modular, collapsible system that could be transported and stored in a fraction of the space of the existing fixed products on sale by the competition. Another innovation was that we could also adjust the geometry of the product, providing a variety of return angles, enabling the user to develop their ball skills further. iControl were extremely enthusiastic about our ideas and we were immediately tasked with creating the first product in their range, named the URBAN.
The Design Phase
We followed our tried and tested approach to product design, in order to develop a fantastic product for iControl. Models and prototypes were key to URBAN’s success, as subtle differences in geometry and material stiffness dramatically affected the usability of the product. Price was also very sensitive and, therefore, was an important factor during the design process. With some good value engineering work, the units were manufactured at an attractive price and offered the finest in features and quality.
Our work and the overall product design has been key in attracting interest prior to manufacture,as the quality and amount of features offered is far better than anything else on the market. The innovative hinged nature of the frame has generated valuable intellectual property for the client –who is extremely pleased with the results.
iControl have recently secured a lucrative order from a sports product distribution chain and manufacture is currently in progress with the plan that URBAN is on sale in stores by mid/late March 2013. A deal with a world champion freestyle footballer has also been agreed for the promotion of URBAN.

“We see 4D as a credible partner, we recognise them as one of our major stakeholders and wouldn’t hesitate in using them again. Throughout the whole process they have been completely open and transparent – we are very satisfied with how things developed.”
